Going through a messy breakup, particularly if it is someone who has been your lover for some time, someone you have been intimate with or someone who you have shared your heart and secrets of your soul with, causes a hurt that cannot be matched by any other. Even if you are the one who initiated the breakup, their feeling of loss and separation is constant and distressing. There is a mental state called separation anxiety that describes that feeling you have when he or she was a constant part of your life, your thoughts, and your emotions . . . and now they are gone. The important thing is to figure out a way to get past this and get the breakup out of your system. The funny clich people use is to wash that guy or gal right out of your hair. Boy, if only it were just that easy! But here are some helpful ideas and concepts you can use to get your recovery from the breakup moving as quickly as possible. Give yourself some time: Expect to feel the pain of the breakup for at least two weeks and possibly several months, depending on the intensity of the relationship. To begin, understand one simple fact: prospects and clients buy for their reasons, not yours. They could care less about your company and your mission statement or the long list of product features you so skillfully articulate. They only care about the outcome your offer provides them. They want the benefit, the impact, the improvement, the comfort, or the security it will deliver. Most small business marketing fails to address these crucial client needs directly. Instead, they focus on the greatness of their product or service and miss what is important. Small business marketers are often their own worst enemies. Frequently, they are not communicating on the buyer’s level of motivation. They are too busy figuring out how to “sell” the product than finding out the reasons the client “buys”. The problem comes down to the marketing strategy that is employed. Are you pushing your product or are you pulling the client through the marketing process? There is a very important distinction here. Since buyers only care about their needs and take action for their personal reasons, why should they pay attention to why you think your product is so great? When you push your products, you are essentially telling the client that they should buy from you because of your reasons. With this egocentric approach you often run into a stone wall of objections and delays. Pushing the product forces them out of their comfort zone and places unnecessary pressure on their decision making process. The buyer will only make a decision when they are comfortably satisfied your offer has met all of their purchasing criteria. As a seller, you must pull them through the process and always let them stay within the limits of their comfort zone. It’s by staying within these boundaries that trust is established and a long term relationship is built with the client. Also remember that the purchasing process is completely rooted in the perceptions of the buyer. They have ultimate control over the process, not you. If you and they are doing the same things, then that person with whom you are flirting is apt to think you are on her or his wave length and in the same mood. There are a couple of cautions with this body language, though. It won’t improve your dating success if the person is reading your body language as mimicking or making fun of. What you want to do is capture the basic spirit of what she or he is doing, and only mirror positive interaction. In general, you’ll want to wait nearly one minute before you read her or his body language and respond with the same mannerisms. Reading body language can require practice, and to improve your dating success you’ll have to be very observant. One of the indicators, for example, that someone finds you appealing lasts less than a second. It’s the eyebrow rise. When a person sees someone he or she finds attractive his eyebrows rise and then fall. It’s an unconscious habit and happens no matter what country or culture you’re in. If the other person might be trying to improve her or his dating success by reading your body language you might try holding your raised eyebrows for a second or two, and give her or him the message you are interested. The trick is to watch for it when you meet someone you fancy. Foremost, of course, was The Game’s appropriately patriotic theme. America’s mettle and proud heritage were showcased to the world through this year’s red, white, and blue logo; music selection by the performers; and depictions of historic U.S. icons. The Game further supported U.S. patriotism through the presence of the armed services, police department, and fire department at the game as well as interviews with troops in Afghanistan. Finally, as if by design, the unlikely Patriots won the championship. Super Bowl XXXVI provided other lessons as well — lessons applicable to small budgets as well as large. Because the same marketing basics and strategic rules apply whether you are marketing online or off, the lessons can be applied to Internet as well as traditional marketing activities. On to the lessons — one for each Old Glory stripe. Lessons from the Advertisers Lesson 1: Know your target audience. Both Pepsi and Levi demonstrated this lesson. - Pepsi’s commercial re-creating several campaigns through the years showed how the company changed its advertising and image to reflect the teen target’s interests. The commercial also played to the current teen market’s interest in nostalgia. - You may have noticed that Levi ran the same commercial twice during the game — the first time in English, the second time in Spanish. This reflects an awareness and appreciation of target audience demographics. Lesson 2: Research. Before airing the Super Bowl commercial, Levi completed a customer preference survey of visitors to the Web site. The winning spot was aired during The Game. Lesson 3: Consider launching your campaign around an event. E*Trade launched a new campaign by firing the monkey and officially announcing a new image. Anonymous mLife commercials in the days before the Super Bowl caused many to wonder, “Just what is mLife?” Late in the game, AT&T revealed mLife as the concept of a mobile, wireless life. Mlife, presumably, is prelude to a series of new AT&T products. Lesson 5: Research trademarks carefully. As a result of the mLife campaign, MetLife initiated a lawsuit against AT&T claiming mLife will dilute the MetLife brand. The lesson? Be aware of the potential for opposition from those with similar names, even if your products are unrelated. This pertains to domain names as well. Lesson 6: Sponsorships can help build brands. Schwab, E*trade, and Miller all helped brand equity by sponsoring portions of The Game this year. Consider this same tactic on a smaller scale. Numerous events, ezines, Web sites, and local causes offer sponsorship opportunities. Lesson 7: Events are new product opportunities. Reebok is offering limited edition commemorative sneakers. Super Bowl apparel is abundant. You can apply this same technique by brainstorming new products related to both online and offline events. Lesson 8: Be sensitive to changes in sentiment. This year E*Trade ditched the cute monkey in favor of a more trustworthy company image. Likely, this is due in part to a change in values and expectations from the company’s customers. Lesson 9: Strategically place brand logos. Motorola produced headsets worn by The Game’s coaches. You probably already knew - their logos flashed on the screen in every coach shot. Logos were predominant on the earpieces and facing outward on the microphones. Take a cue from Motorola and place your logos where they will be seen. Lessons from the Game The league and teams themselves displayed lessons in marketing related to strategy, analysis, and implementation. Among them: Lesson 10: Involve your customers. The NFL draws interest in both its broadcasts and Web sites by conducting votes online. During the game, fans were asked to take various polls online and could vote for the Super Bowl MVP. Lesson 11: Promote across media. The team used multiple media outlets - game broadcasts, SuperBowl.com ( http://www.superbowl.com ), and NFL.com (http://www.nfl.com ) — to promote the game. Additionally, they synergistically built audience for all three outlets by cross-promoting each through the other two. Lesson 12: Take advantage of competitor’s weaknesses. Look for a chink in the competition’s armor and use it to your best advantage. One of the few Ram’s weaknesses is a propensity for turnovers. The overmatched Patriots knew exploiting this weakness was one of the few chances they had of winning The Game. When the opportunities came, they were ready. Lesson 13: Implementation is key. The underdog Patriots played a strong game. When it was time to execute, they pulled it off well. The same holds true for marketing programs. You Can’t Fool Mother Nature

By Patty Gale In the 1970’s, there was a margarine commercial with the message of “you can’t fool mother nature.” This statement never held more true than it does today. Up until the very early 1900’s, the farming and livestock in this country was grown and raised using natural and organic methods. It was just the way it was done and it didn’t need to be called “organic”. In the last 50 years or so, more extensive use of chemicals became widespread. Remember when a tomato actually tasted like a tomato? With the advent of chemical pesticides and herbicides for produce and steroids and antibiotics fed to livestock, is it any wonder why people are nervous about the future of our health? We are what we eat, there’s no question about that. There is a saying, “garbage in, garbage out.” Biotechnology is all the “buzzword” these days. We now have genetically modified foods in our grocery stores, except there are no labels to let you know. Genetically modified foods, (or GMO foods as they are known) are products that have been genetically mixed with DNA mixed from other foods to supposedly grow a product that is more resistant to disease and will grow faster and bigger. Ever notice how the fruit in the produce aisle is so much larger than ever before? Yet, the taste leaves much to be desired. A tomato grown in a greenhouse will never compare to a tomato grown in a backyard. It is not nearly as difficult to find stores carrying organic and steroid-free foods as it was even just 20 years ago. Organic products are becoming more mainstream than ever before and are not reserved for only for health food stores any longer. Several large grocery chains now carry complete lines of organic products as a result of the demand from consumers. It is just common sense. When you mess with nature, the outcome cannot possibly be good. This is all the more reason to choose organically grown fruits and vegetables and drug-free meats. Timing Your Job Offer Acceptance To Make Sure You Get Hired By The Right Firm

By Mark Baber Recently, one of the job candidates we recruited and presented on a retail operations job search attended a final interview with the hiring authority. The company who had initiated the job search was in an expansion mode, so required two skilled operations specialists, and the candidate we had recruited and presented offered a nearly exact match to the skills the company was seeking. The first three interviews went well, the candidate’s background and personality and business strategies were a good fit for the approach utilized by the hiring company. Because the candidate had already agreed to and signed off on a comprehensive financial and criminal background check — the check revealed solid finances and no criminal activities — we felt confident that a formal job offer would be made at the final interview. Plus, we had verified with the hiring authority directly that, assuming the final interview didn’t expose some question or another regarding the candidate, the job offer would be made verbally at the final interview with a written offer to follow by mail the next day. Trying to be thorough, we further verified with the candidate that they would accept a job offer if extended at that final interview; even discussed the exact income range that the offer would cover, having discussed that with the hiring authority when they confirmed that an offer was likely. We didn’t want our client to be surprised by making a job offer that was rejected by the job candidate. Nor did we want the candidate to feel they had been slighted by receiving a job offer that was not in the income range they were expecting. Then, to top off our efforts to avert unforseen delays, we double checked both the client and the candidate on the day of the final interview, to see if either had changed their minds. Both confirmed their steadfastness to pursue the arrangement; so we reassured each to the other. What, then, happened to have me bring up this circumstance as an example? Well, the offer was made, as expected, and the candidate thanked the hiring authority, said they’d have to think about it, discuss it with their spouse, then get back with an answer in a couple days. At that point, the deal effectively died. Immediately following the interview the client called me and withdrew the job offer, as it had been a verbal offer that was expected to be accepted immediately. He left me with the task of informing the candidate. In my follow up conversation with the candidate, the candidate was taken by surprise that the offer was withdrawn. After all, he cooperated with the interview process, attended all the interviews, even submitted himself to a deep financial and criminal background check. Add to that his genuine interest and excellent match to the requirements of the hiring firm. I asked him why he didn’t accept the job immediately. He explained that it was professional diligence to consider a job offer, discuss it with the key players — like his wife — and then formally report the decision. He couldn’t understand what happened. Why would they make a job offer just to take it off the table within a couple of hours? I explained the simple truth of it. By understanding that the offer had been reviewed with him, the salary, the benefits, the perks, insurance, and other details relating to the job, there was an expectation by the hiring authority that the candidate had already done his professional diligence, as illustrated by the candidate’s attendance at the final interview. Having done so, by delaying his acceptance of the job offer, it expressed a flaw in the candidate’s decision making process. It was assumed that after three interviews and the job discover those interactions suggested, the candidate should not have hesitated to execute the decision to accept the job right then and there, and should have negotiated a start date. To do any less than that told the hiring authority that the candidate had a weakened decision making process. Okay, maybe you or I wouldn’t come to that same conclusion, but remember that the two people the client firm was to hire would be responsible for tens-of-millions of dollars, so they were taking no chances. What this example tells us, is that once the offer is made, especially if it is proceeded by a detailed examination of the job offer elements, don’t delay in accepting the job. If you have questions, ask them. If you are hesitant, don’t tease the hiring firm, be certain whether you want to pursue the job or to leave it alone. If you have other job offers in hand or are expected, tell everyone involved. The prevailing wisdom is to play things close to the chest and accumulate job offers till you get the one you like the best, or negotiate your way to a better deal. Those strategies may work in some environments, but in my experience, decisive action and honest disclosure, when it comes to where you stand in relation to a job offer, will keep your resume in the running for the sort of job you are seeking.
